Hwangdon is a shabu restaurant near city hall in i-dong. Unlike many other shabu restaurants, it is not a buffet they focus only on the shabu. They also have an option to have grilled meat with your shabu meat. We didn’t have that on this occasion, but we tried it before and it is pretty good.
The shabu comes in three courses: 1. boiled meat with vegetables wrapped in rice paper; 2. noodles cooked in the broth from the first course; and 3. juk (kind of like egg fried rice) cooked in the reduced broth of the previous two courses.
The first course was great, unlike many shabu places where they give you a bowl of hot water to wet your rice paper, here they have flavored water and it is attached to the side of the grill to keep it warm. The vegetables and mushrooms for the pot were good too, there was a variety and they were high quality. You could go back for more if you wanted.
The second course was the noodles. These were very tasty but a little more difficult to eat than regular noodles because they were a little slippy due to the broth they were cooked in. The last course was the juk, which I think it was the best I’ve ever had. I think cooking in the broth of the previous two courses makes a huge difference to the flavour – it was very rich. Even though we were full from the previous two courses we couldn’t get enough of this!
In my opinion, this is the best shabu restaurant in Pohang.
